Carlson Law Firm Attorney L. Todd Kelly Helps Family Win $5 Million Verdict for Dog Attack
A jury in Victoria, TX voted unanimously to award $5 million to the family of Kylar Johnson 6 years after a pit bull attack in 2012 lead to the death of 4-year-old Kylar. The damages awarded for this case are out of the norm for Texas where dog bites compensation averages $30,000.
Carlson Law Firm Attorney L. Todd Kelly filed the suit on behalf of the Johnson family 2 years after the passing of Kylar.
On March 25, 2012, Kylar was playing in the front yard when he disappeared from his father. It wasn’t until the next morning when neighbor, Manuel Garcia, found the boy’s body at the feet of one of his ten pit bulls still clutching his Buzz Lightyear toy.
“The dog owner was a dog breeder who trained his dogs to hunt. Additionally, he kept them chained just out of reach of one another to make them mean,” Kelly said.
During the trial, Kelly placed a Buzz Lightyear toy in the room and read a poem to demonstrate to the jury the pain and fear Kylar felt in his final moments.
Kelly went on to say, “The jury was asked to be the voice for this child whose last words were not heard. They did just that.”
