March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time when the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) and its nationwide network of advocates attempt to increase public knowledge of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and to advance brain injury research, treatment and prevention.

According to the BIAA, more than 1.5 million people sustain TBIs in the United States each year. Many of these individuals will require lifelong care as a result of their brain injuries.

Motor vehicle accidents account for 17 percent of traumatic brain injuries, according to the BIAA. Brain injuries are especially common in motorcycle accidents and semi-truck accidents.

Workplace accidents also result in thousands of brain injuries annually. Statistics from the BIAA indicate that on-the-job accidents cause about 16 percent of all TBIs annually.

Although significant advances in brain injury assessment and treatment have been made in recent years, traumatic brain injuries can be fatal. If a loved one died due to a brain injury caused by the carelessness of another, an attorney may be able to help you pursue the financial security you need by filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
