Almost Two Million Refrigerators Recalled
Maytag Corp. has recalled 1.6 million refrigerators because of an electrical problem with the relay. The relay is the part that turns on the compressor. The electrical failure can cause the refrigerator to overheat creating a serious fire hazard. The company has received over 40 reports o f relay ignitions, ranging from smoke damage to serious structural damage to the kitchen.
The recall includes Admiral, Amana, Crosley, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, Maytag, and Performa by Maytag side by side and top-freezer models. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label located on the left upper side or top middle of the refrigerator liner.

- Side by side refrigerators recalled end with the serial numbers AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, CA, CC, CE, CG, CJ, CL, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ.
- Side by side refrigerators recalled begin with the model numbers ARS, CS, JC, JS, MS, MZ and PS.
- On top freezer refrigerators recalled end with the serial numbers A, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ.
- On top freezer refrigerators recalled begin with the model numbers AT, CT, MT and PT.
The refrigerators were sold in department and appliance stores, as well as by homebuilders from January 2001 to January 2004, and cost between $350 and $1600.
