Crib Recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that 20 models of Dorel Asia cribs have been recalled due to defects which may endanger the lives of children. All of these cribs have drop sides and fixed front rails.

Approximately 635,000 cribs have been included in the recall. Stores carrying these cribs include Kmart, Sears, and Wal-Mart.

Product defects in the cribs may result in the drop side detaching, creating a situation where a young child may get trapped in the crib, leading to suffocation or strangulation. One six-month-old child from Iowa died of strangulation after the drop side detached.

Some cribs involved in the recall may lead to the strangulation of a child due to slats that easily break. The slats are prone to breakage while the crib is in use, when it is being assembled, and during shipping.

Dorel Asia has received 31 reports of dangerous incidents involving these drop side cribs. On six occasions, children were trapped between the mattress and the drop side. The company has also received 36 reports of broken slats, two of which resulted in children getting trapped.
