Louisiana Helicopter Crash Kills Eight
A helicopter ferrying workers to a Shell Oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico crashed Sunday afternoon killing eight and critically injuring one. The helicopter belonged to Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., and crashed shortly after taking off from Amelia. The first distress call was picked up by an Air Force base in Virginia around 3:00pm Sunday. Rescue workers found the wreckage near Bayou Penchant, a remote area about 70 miles southeast of New Orleans. The rescue effort was hampered by thick fog.
The lone survivor, a 28-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in Houma. He is an employee for Dynamic Industries. Four of the dead also worked for Dynamic Industries. The other four include two employees of MMR Offshore Services, and the two pilots.
Authorities are still investigating what may have caused the accident.
