Leg injuries are all too common in automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents, slips, trips and falls, or at work. Passengers involved in an automobile accident, for example, often slam their knees onto the dashboard, regardless of whether they were wearing a seatbelt. It is not uncommon in such cases for the passengers to sustain a meniscus tear, which may require physical therapy, surgery, or even replacement of the knee. If a foot or ankle injury is sustained, however, it could result in permanent harm and pain.
Motor vehicle accidents and "slip and falls" can also result in leg fractures, which are usually very serious, and can even be life threatening. Leg fractures are also frequently caused by pedestrian accidents, work-related injuries (especially at construction sites or at work that requires strenuous or repetitive leg movement), overuse (especially in those with bone health-related issues), assaults, abuse, animal attacks, and sports-related injuries.
In addition to the numerous bones in the foot and the patella (kneecap), there are three major bones in the leg that connect the pelvis, knee, and foot. The femur (thighbone) is the bone in the upper leg and happens to be the largest bone in our body. The fibula is one of the two bones in the lower leg. The other bone in the lower leg is the tibia (shinbone), which is larger than the fibula, and is the most frequently broken of the three.
Potential complications of a fractured leg include:
- Chronic pain, mostly in the leg, hip, knee, back or ankle
- Osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Compartment syndrome (a serious condition in which increased pressure within a confined area impairs blood supply and possibly leads to nerve damage and muscle death)
- Nerve or blood vessel damage
- Poor healing of the bone(s)
- Legs of unequal length
- Arthritis
- Infection, hemorrhage, or tissue damage that can lead to death
Regardless of the type of leg injury or how a leg injury occurs, the potential resulting lack of mobility and productivity can greatly affect one's quality of life. Recovery can also be lengthy, painful, and expensive.
If you or a loved one's leg injury was due to the negligence of another, you may be entitled to much needed compensation. Request a case evaluation by a qualified personal injury attorney.
