TOYOTA TUNDRA Expaneded Recall

Personal Injury Lawyers - Representing People Nationwide

In November 2009, Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 110,000 Tundra trucks sold in 20 cold-weather states to fix part of the frame that could corrode. Then on March 10, 2010 the automaker announced that it would expand the recall to all 50 states.

The expanded nationwide recall covers all 2000-2003 model year Tundra trucks. The concern is that excessive corrosion of the rear crossmember could cause the spare tire to drop off and present a road hazard. The corrosion could also affect the rear brake lines and proportioning valve, which could diminish braking capability.

Curt McAllister, a Toyota spokesman, was not able to provide an estimate of the number of additional Tundras that will be affected. He was able to confirm, however, that a special service campaign will be launched and that owners will begin to be notified in mid-March.

According to the NHTSA's recall "summary of the problem," dealers will inspect the rear crossmember, brake lines, related components, and replace them if needed. If it does not need to be replaced, the crossmember will be sprayed with a corrosion protection compound. As of November 2009, Toyota has been advising that until a remedy is obtained, owners of the affected Tundras should remove the spare tire from under the truck.

The recall expansion comes amid a slew of recent automotive recalls. Toyota, alone, has recently recalled more than eight million vehicles worldwide for unintended acceleration , and nearly 500,000 hybrids, including its top-selling Prius, because of braking problems, among other recalls.
