The state of Tennessee requires automobile drivers to purchase bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. At a minimum, the driver must have bodily injury liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person injured in any one accident and $50,000 total for all persons injured in any one accident. Additionally, the driver must have a minimum of $10,000 property damage liability coverage for the destruction of the property of others as a result of an automobile accident. This is often represented as 25/50/10 coverage.
Tennessee is unique in that drivers may choose between a "split limit" and a "single limit" policy. The split limit policy is the 25/50/10 coverage described above. The single limit policy allows policyholders to purchase coverage with a single limit of $60,000 per accident for all damages sustained in that accident.
Automobile drivers have the option of purchasing uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage. This type of insurance is meant to cover bodily injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. In Tennessee, uninsured motorist coverage includes underinsured motorist coverage. If a person chooses to purchase uninsured motorist coverage, the coverage may be purchased in any amount not less than the amount of bodily injury coverage required by law.
