Colorado Auto Insurance Attorney

The state of Colorado requires automobile drivers to purchase bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. At a minimum, the driver must have bodily injury liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person injured in any one accident and $50,000 total for all persons injured in any one accident. Additionally, the driver must have a minimum of $15,000 property damage liability coverage for the destruction of the property of others as a result of an automobile accident. This is often represented as 25/50/15 coverage.

Automobile drivers have the option of purchasing uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage. This type of insurance is meant to cover bodily injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, and can only be waived by the policyholder. Generally, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is normally sold as a single unite. If a person purchases uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, the minimum amount of coverage must be at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Some policies issued prior to July 1, 2003 may continue to provide no-fault coverage to policyholders. In such cases, the policyholder may be entitled to personal injury protection benefits which cover reasonable and necessary medical benefits resulting from an auto accident within the past five years, rehabilitation benefits within the last ten years or $50,000 (whichever occurs first), loss of income within the past year, essential services benefits within the past year, and a $1000 death benefit. Again, this benefit is only available to policies issued prior to July 1, 2003 that continue to provide no-fault coverage.
