GM Recall - Tuesday, March 2, 2010

General Motors has announced a recall for approximately 1.3 million Chevrolet and Pontiac vehicles sold in North America due to power steering issues. There have been 14 auto accidents and one injury associated with the defective autos.

The following vehicles have been affected by the recall:

  • 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt (United States)
  • 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 (United States)
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada)
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 (Mexico)

The GM recall represents the culmination of an investigation into the power steering problem that was initiated in January 2009. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently started their own investigation into the problem after receiving more than 1,100 reports of power steering failures.

According to GM, the power steering issue takes awhile to develop and generally occurs after the warranty has expired. Vehicles most commonly affected have been driven 20,000-30,000 miles.

GM has not devised a solution to the problem yet, but spokesmen for the company have stated drivers will still be able to maintain control of the vehicle if the power steering fails. However, greater steering effort under 15 mph should be expected. If the power steering fails on your vehicle, you will hear a chime and the "Power Steering" light will come on to alert you of the issue.

If you are injured in an auto accident caused by defective power steering problems in one of these GM cars, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages. An experienced defective auto attorney can review your case and advise you on how to proceed.
