Studies Link Avandia to Heart Conditions - Monday, February 22, 2010
Government studies evaluating the safety of the diabetes medication Avandia indicate that patients taking this drug face an increased risk of heart attacks and heart failure compared to patients taking Actos, an alternative diabetes drug.
The reports indicate that switching all Avandia patients to Actos would result in 500 fewer heart attacks and 300 fewer heart failures each month. In the third quarter of 2009 alone, Avandia was linked to 304 heart-related deaths.
Currently, there is a serious debate among the FDA regarding the safety of Avandia. Several FDA officials have strongly recommended that the drug be removed from the market, while others believe the data regarding Avandia's safety is contradictory and further information is needed before the drug is pulled.
GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical manufacturer that produces Avandia, insists that there is no clear evidence indicating that their diabetes drug increases the risk of heart attacks. While reports of the drug's safety issues have drastically reduced Avandia's sales over the past few years, hundreds of thousands of patients still take the medication to control their Type 2 diabetes.
