Hospital Operates on Wrong Side of Brain, Sued for Malpractice - Wednesday, February 10, 2010
The family of Deborah Blankenship has sued a Michigan hospital for medical malpractice and wrongful death after doctors performed surgery on the wrong side of her brain. Blankenship was 48 when she died in December 2008.
Oakwood Hospital treated Blankenship in August 2007 when she came in complaining of severe headaches. They diagnosed her with acute leak from an artery in her brain. The doctors were unable to block the leak, forcing them to perform an emergency craniotomy on Blankenship. In order to complete the procedure, doctors must cut open her skull.
Unfortunately, the doctors erroneously operated on the right side of her brain when the problem was on the left side. Due to the delay in treating the condition caused by the wrong site surgery, Blankenship suffered severe brain damage. The doctors were never disciplined after the incident.
Blankenship's family is seeking to recover damages for their loss. They are also hoping that their medical malpractice lawsuit can help prevent other families from suffering a similar tragedy due to medical errors.
