Slain Woman’s Family Receives $2.5 Million in Wrongful Death Suit - Tuesday, January 5, 2010
The family of Tarika Wilson has recently settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city of Columbus, Ohio for $2.5 million. Two years ago, the 26-year-old woman was shot and killed by a police officer during a drug raid.
Wilson was unarmed at the time of the shooting, and she was holding her one-year-old son in her arms as she died. Her child survived the shooting, but had a finger amputated as a result of the incident.
The police sergeant who killed Wilson was eventually exonerated of all criminal charges related to the accidental shooting. He was participating in a SWAT team raid of Wilson's home in an attempt to apprehend her boyfriend, who was suspected of dealing drugs. The sergeant recklessly fired three shots into Wilson's bedroom where she and her six children were hiding. The officer was unable to see the people in the room or whether they were armed.
The settlement was made by the city's insurance company, and it will take effect pending approval by a federal judge. The money will be placed in a trust to be used in the raising of Wilson's children.
The city of Columbus has stated that the settlement is not an admission of liability. Furthermore, they believe the police officer acted properly during the raid, even though none of the people in the room were armed.
