New Law Bans Texting While Driving for Trucks, Buses - Wednesday, January 27, 2010
The federal government has just enacted a new law banning commercial truck and bus drivers from texting while driving. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stated that the law is intended to cut down on the number of truck accidents and make our nation's roads safer for all drivers.
The new law takes effect immediately, imposing harsh fines on drivers who fail to comply. Truck and bus drivers who continue to text while driving may face both civil and criminal penalties as well as fines as large as $2,750.
A study released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration revealed that drivers take their eyes off the road for approximately 4.6 out of every six seconds when texting while driving. The impact of this distraction has been huge. Drivers are 20 times more likely to get into an accident if they are texting.
This new law is the latest attempt by the federal government to crack down on distracted driving. Several months ago, President Obama signed an executive order banning federal employees from texting while driving government-owned vehicles.
So far, nineteen states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws prohibiting texting while driving. Most likely, many more states will follow suit in the upcoming years.
