3.8 Million Toyota Vehicles Recalled - Wednesday, September 30, 2009

The NHTSA and Toyota are warning drivers of Lexus and Toyota vehicles to remove the driver's side floor mat due to a risk of them pressing on the accelerator and causing an automobile accident. The seven vehicle models all have a removable mat that can interfere with driving.

The Toyota company released a statement on Tuesday, September 29, stating, "A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death."

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has stated this is "an urgent matter....For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration."

This recall comes after an investigation into a fatal crash of a family who were driving a 2009 Lexus ES350 loaned by a San Diego dealership. It is believed the all-weather floor mat interfered with the accelerator due to the way the mat was installed.

The models affected by the recall are:

  • 2007-2010 Toyota Camry
  • 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Toyota Prius
  • 2005-2010 Toyota Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra
  • 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350
  • 2006-2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350

If you own one of the vehicles affected by this recall and have questions, contact your local Toyota or Lexus dealer.
