Zicam Nasal Spray Warning - Wednesday, June 17, 2009

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning due to reports of Zicam cold remedy nasal spray causing a loss of sense of smell. The Zicam product comes in sprays, gels, and swabs, and contains zinc. There have been at least 130 cases of anosmia, or loss of sense of smell since 1999.

Anosmia can affect people temporarily or permanently. This can have obvious devastating effects on the victim's quality of life. Because smell is tied closely to taste, many people who suffer with anosmia go through life never tasting food or drink again. This can also affect smelling gas leaks, poisons, and other items that can seriously injure or kill.

The affected Zicam products include:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs Kids Size
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel

The FDA has advised consumers who may have these products in their homes to dispose of them immediately. Using any of these products even for a brief period of time can disrupt the sense of smell temporarily or permanently.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by these Zicam products, you may be eligible for compensation due to this defective product. While losing the sense of smell temporarily, as you may with a common cold, is frustrating, losing your sense of smell permanently can have serious adverse effects.
