A recent study has identified a protein in certain blood cells that can be infected by a parasite; leading to reckless behavior. One scientist is even suggesting that airplane pilots and other professional drivers get tested regularly for the protein.
The parasite that affects the blood is called toxoplasma, and the infection it causes can last a lifetime. In the past, the parasite was considered to be harmless in humans, but this new information shows that people with blood type Rh-negative can become infective with the parasite.
Once infected with toxoplasma, people have slower reaction times. The study suggests they are two and a half times more likely to be involved in a car accident, motorcycle accident, or other accident than people who aren't infected. One of the reasons the parasite affects people with Rh-negative blood is because this type of blood lacks a protein on the surface of the cells.
One of the scientists involved in the study thinks that people infected with toxoplasma cause between 400,000 and one million road deaths a year. These shocking statistics might help shed light on how to prevent and avoid car accidents in the future.
