Horse Jockey Suffers Serious Spinal Cord Injury in Chicago, Illinois - Friday, June 5, 2009

A Chicago horse jockey suffered a serious neck injury and spinal cord injury after falling with his horse at Arlington Park. At the moment, a surgery has already been performed to stabilize his spinal cord, but the jockey is paralyzed in the lower part of his legs.

After the hose accident, the jockey was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. There, doctors performed an incredibly serious spinal cord operation that required an incision be made along the length of the spine. The doctors then performed surgery from 2:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. After the surgery, the jockey could squeeze hands, but since he was on a ventilator, he could not speak.

In addition to the serious spinal cord injuries, he also suffered several broken ribs. Doctors say that two of the vertebrae in the jockey's neck were fractured but other injuries lower in the spinal cord caused the paralysis. Specifically, the T5 and T6 vertebrae were jammed together, putting serious pressure on the nerves within the spinal cord.

While this may be an uncommon way for a spinal cord injury to happen, it is a grim reminder of how serious and life altering they can be. Spinal cord injuries can also occur from car accidents, motorcycle accidents, and slip and fall accidents.

If you or one of your loved ones has been involved in any kind of accident and has suffered a spinal cord injury, you may be able to recover compensation. Please contact Personal Injury.com to find an experienced spinal cord injury attorney in your area.
