Vermont Boy Scout Camp Shut Down for Asbestos - Monday, May 18, 2009
A Boy Scout camp in Eden, Vermont has been shut down after high levels of asbestos were found on the campgrounds. After being alerted to the presence of asbestos on their property, the Boy Scout council decided to close down the Mount Norris Scout Reservation to prevent harmful exposure to the toxic substance.
The Boy Scout camp is approximately three and a half miles from the town's abandoned asbestos mine. This past winter, the Vermont Department of Health publicly warned the town that residents living near the mine were at risk of asbestos exposure.
Based on this report, the Boy Scout council decided to test the campground. Tests determined that the camp contained quantities of asbestos that were in the questionable range. Scout Executive Richard Stockton stated that in order to put the safety of the children, families and staff first, they were shutting down the camp.
The council is currently working in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the contaminated property. They hope to reopen the camp by next January.
There were approximately 700 campers planning on attending Mount Norris Scout Reservation this summer. Currently, the council is looking for alternative locations for each of them to attend.
