Chemical Plant Explosion Causes Hundreds to Evacuate in Columbus, Wisconsin - Monday, May 18, 2009
On Monday, May 11th, a chemical warehouse went up in flames, causing huge explosions and pouring massive plumes of smoke into the sky in Columbus, Wisconsin. At the moment, investigators are not sure what types of chemicals have burned, but they could cause injury.
Just after 8 p.m. emergency firefighter crews from all over Wisconsin were sent to Columbus to help battle the fire that lasted over a day and a half. At least three of the firefighters working on the blaze were injured and sent to the hospital. Flames from the chemical plant explosion reached as high as a ten-story building.
Since the fire engulfed many different types of chemicals that were being stored at the facility, nearly 150 people were evacuated from the area surrounding the chemical plant. The people evacuated from the area were told to go to a hospital if they began feeling nauseous, felt sensations in their noses or throats, or if their eyes began bothering them.
