GM Recalls 1.5 Million Vehicles - Tuesday, April 14, 2009

General Motors just can't seem to get a break. With news of a federal bailout, a leader booted out (again by the feds), and weeks of bankruptcy speculation, unsold vehicles, furloughs, and layoffs, comes yet another vehicle recall.

The recall affects nearly 1.5 million vehicles due to the threat of an engine fire caused by an oil leak. Some of the vehicles may drop the oil onto the exhaust manifold while the driver is breaking hard. This could then cause a fire to spread to a plastic spark plug wire channel, which increases the risk of an engine compartment fire.

The recall applies to the following mid-sized vehicles with 3.8 liter engines:

  • 1997-2003 Buick Regal
  • 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala
  • 1998-99 Oldsmobile Intrigue
  • 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

Notice that all of these problem vehicles were built between a decade ago and five years ago. Part of this time seems to be when GM was more concerned with getting people, mostly those who live in the suburbs, behind the wheel of the Humvee than it was with keeping people behind something like the Impala. Some of these names, like the Monte Carlo and Impala, may have been part of classic Americana, and the Pontiac Grand Prix's name is nearly 50 years old, but those glory days seem long past.

This is yet another ignoble mark on the once great American auto industry. What's worse is that it isn't even a surprise anymore.
