Surgeon Removes "Tumor" From Wrong Lung - Thursday, June 26, 2008

In New Jersey, a surgeon operated on the wrong lung of one of his patients and then tried to cover it up by falsifying the patient's chart. The surgeon was supposed to remove a tumor from the patient's left lung, but instead, he removed a portion of the patient's right lung and then told the patient there was a life-threatening tumor in that lung to cover up his mistake.

The State Board of Medical Examiners found that the doctor's actions constituted "gross negligence." The error could have been easily prevented had the doctor taken the "most basic and minimal of actions that could be taken by a surgeon in advance of surgery."
